Why Clean Sash Windows Regularly?

Regular cleaning of sash windows is essential for several reasons, not only will cleaning windows enhance the beauty of your home, but removing any dirt and debris can help prevent damage to the window frames and glass. Cleaning will also help your windows to function more smoothly as they are less likely to get stuck.

What Do You Need?

  • Soft cloths or microfiber cloths

  • Sponge

  • Bucket of warm water

  • Mild detergent or vinegar

  • Soft-bristled brush

  • Squeegee

  • Old toothbrush

  • Dustpan and brush or vacuum cleaner

  • Protective gloves (optional)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

1. Preparation

Begin by preparing your workspace. Lay down old sheets or towels to protect your flooring. Remove any curtains, blinds, or other window treatments to give you full access to the windows.

2. Dust and Remove Cobwebs

Using a soft cloth or a duster, gently dust the window frames and sills to remove loose dirt and cobwebs. Pay attention to the corners where cobwebs tend to accumulate.

3. Clean the Frames

Mix a small amount of mild detergent or vinegar with warm water in a bucket. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and wring it out well. Wipe down the window frames, being careful not to saturate the wood, especially if they are older or painted. For stubborn dirt, use a soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush to gently scrub the affected areas.

4. Wash the Glass

Using a fresh bucket of water mixed with a bit of detergent or vinegar, wash the glass panes. Start from the top and work your way down to prevent streaks. Use a sponge or cloth to apply the solution, then a squeegee to remove it. Wipe the squeegee blade with a cloth after each pass to avoid transferring dirt back onto the glass.

5. Tackle the Sash Channels

The channels where the sashes slide can accumulate a lot of dirt and debris. Use a small, soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush to clean these areas. You might need to vacuum out the debris first if it's particularly dirty.

6. Clean the Interior Mechanism

For older sash windows with a cord and weight system, ensure the cords are intact, and the weights move freely. Clean around these mechanisms with a cloth. For modern sash windows, ensure any sliding mechanisms are clean and free from obstructions.

7. Polish and Dry

Once the windows and frames are clean, use a dry, soft cloth to polish the glass and remove any remaining streaks. Ensure all parts are thoroughly dry to prevent water damage.

8. Reassemble and Replace

Replace any window treatments you removed earlier. If you have wooden sash windows, consider applying a wood polish or conditioner to keep the frames looking their best.

Tips for Maintaining Sash Windows:

  • Regular Dusting: Dust the frames and sills regularly to prevent build-up.

  • Seasonal Deep Cleaning - perform a thorough cleaning at least twice a year.

  • Check for Damage: Regularly inspect the frames, glass, and mechanisms for any signs of damage and address them promptly to prevent them from developing into larger, more costly problems.

  • Lubricate: For smooth operation, occasionally lubricate the tracks and pulleys with a silicone-based lubricant.
